Just some basic comments:

> #!/bin/bash

set -e

> DIR=$1

General rule: _*Allways*_ use quotes for variable expansion.

Reason:

$ md foo\ bar
$ DIR=Foo\ bar
$ cd $DIR
bash: cd: foo: No such file or directory
