It's woking fine for me... I'm using VMwareWorkstation-4.5.2-8848 running on top of kernel-2.6.9-rc2-mm1-VP-S1 and Fedora Core RawHide with no apparent problems (i.e. dmesg shows no errors) and total functionality.

Have you accidentally turned down the maximum sized shared memory segment on your system, making an allocation of shared memory of that size impossible? (assuming the 2.6 kernel has the same tunable that the 2.4 series had for shared memory).
