Apparently, the fix below never got into 2.0.39, despite the claim
in the changelog to the opposite; this because I applied this patch
_after_ creating the final patch and tarball for 2.0.39; however,
since I _did_ apply it to the 2.0.39-tree, it hasn't shown up in the
2.0.40-patch either. Disturbing I say, disturbing. So, here's
2.0.40-rc3. PLEASE test and complain if there's any problems.
