pppd: Inappropriate ioctl for device

I get the above message when using pppd 2.4.0b4 and kernel 2.4.0-test4 and
multilink ppp on async serial ports around 80% of the time. It does it on
either the first modem to dial up, or on subsequent ones. Simply retrying
makes it work eventually.

Any clues?
