I have been running the SuSE version of 2.2.16 SMP and so far (knock-knock)
the uptime is OK :

  6:39am up 11 days, 8:58, 10 users, load average: 4.03, 4.03, 4.14

and now weird slowdowns I experienced with the stock 2.2.16 and 2.2.17pre
(up to 9 IIRC) kernels.
