Patch: pre3-2 compile fixes

        Here are some simple fixes that I made to get Linux closer to
compiling under -Werrror. I made a number of changes and then wimped
out, removing -Werror from the makefile for the moment. These are
some of the simplest changes, that I am submitting as a group so that
you can integrate them quickly without having to think about them too
much. I will have more patches later.
