do_try_to_free_pages failes in pre17-6

This I found in /var/log/warn after some work with the gimp:

Jun 23 23:33:56 eduard kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for kswapd...
Jun 23 23:33:56 eduard last message repeated 2 times
Jun 23 23:43:56 eduard kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for kswapd...
Jun 24 01:11:00 eduard kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for kswapd...
Jun 24 01:11:38 eduard last message repeated 9 times

The last two messages are the result of a test with a 100MB-image scan
(xsane). Memory was never really tight, 250 MB of 256 MB RAM were used
and about 20 MB of 350 MB swap (number increasing to about 60 MB). The
system froze up for a moment, even the mouse did not respond. After
that, gimp crashed with following message:

peter@eduard:~ > Gdk-ERROR
**: X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

** WARNING **: script-fu: wire_read: unexpected EOF

[1]+ Exit 1 gimp

This has never happened before. 2.2.15 was a little funny and froze up
sometimes for several seconds, but did not crash gimp. This is on an
Athlon 700 with an Asus K7V board.

VM seems to be in rather bad shape now.
