The build at www.kernel.org does not work at present without about four
hours of hacking to get it to build. Sure, having patches separately is
fine, but the Linux kernel is not an external patch, it's part of the
core code -- and it expected to be here and working. The main gripe
here (which you have obviously missed) is that the IA64 tree at
www.kernel.org does not build at all without the patch, and the so
called "patch" is .config scripts and a bunch of other stuff that should
be in the main tree..
