We are in the process of deploying 2.2.16 + combo patch. One of our
users reported today that his machine temporaily froze (no cursor
movement in X) for 10-20 seconds and then recovered. He is uncertain
whether his disk drive was thrashing at the time.

The following syslog messages were approximately concurrent with the
freeze:

Jun 16 08:05:38 corinthian kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for magicdev...
Jun 16 08:06:07 corinthian kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for automount...
Jun 16 08:06:08 corinthian last message repeated 22 times
Jun 16 08:06:08 corinthian kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for customs...
Jun 16 08:06:08 corinthian last message repeated 11 times
Jun 16 08:06:09 corinthian kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for rpc.rstatd...
Jun 16 08:06:09 corinthian last message repeated 15 times
Jun 16 08:06:09 corinthian kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for crond...
Jun 16 08:06:09 corinthian last message repeated 5 times
Jun 16 08:06:09 corinthian kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for kpanel...
Jun 16 08:06:10 corinthian last message repeated 12 times

The system is a 750MHz uniprocessor Pentium III with 384M of RAM and
512M of swap.

Unfortunately for this bug report, he was running VMware. I will send
another message if we see the same behavior without VMware.
