I didn't try 2.0.38, because I couldn't compile it. (I suppose I need
an old version of GCC for that.) But I tried 2.3.99-pre7, and
apparently the same problem exists there: "cvs update" killed the PPP
connection.
I also had the PPP connection die when running fetchmail at the same
time as an FTP upload. I don't think I've ever had a problem with just
a download, though, FTP or HTTP.
Curiously, I was able to do a cvs update while I was downloading
2.3.99-pre7 by FTP, so this is a possible work-around: don't actually
run 2.3.99-pre7, but keep on downloading it again and again ...
