I'm just learning about the kernel, so I believe I understand this issue.
No matter where you draw the line, some _whiner_ isn't going to be satisfied.
I say that if a person wants to accomplish a goal, then they should assume
the responsibility to make it real. It's just that simple.

So what is the best policy on this matter?

Someone asking for help should have worked the problem to the point of
asking a focused question that has eluded their best effort. Under those
circumstances, I would think many would be happy to take a minute and
offer advice.

Taking responsibility and attempting to resolve a problem via your own
initiative is also the best way to learn.
