I'd like to think that it is..

WRT maintainers, if there is an active maintainer of a driver you should
generally work with them unless there is a good reason not to. For
obvious stuff like fixing typos which break compiles, and things like
that, it is still preferred that changes be sent to the maintainer, but
it is sometimes faster to post "stupid simple obvious" changes to
linux-kernel, and CC them to the maintainer and Linus.
