Yes, through ssh (1). I see that the rsync list does indeed have recent
reports of this happening.

       Which versions hang with rsync 2.4.2? Tridge has found that ssh needs to
       be configured to use socketpairs instead of pipes, is that the
       distinction?

laptop:
rsync version 2.3.1
ssh version 1.2.27

workstation:
rsync version 2.4.3
ssh version 1.2.13

Yes, might have been an rsync issue: I forgot that I had recently upgraded
rsync on the workstation. Please just take the report as an anecdote for
the time being. To make amends I'll do some more benchmarking.
