Excellent summary of the situation. From past experience, the
only way to stabilize code is not to change it very much at all!
Incremental changes are great for very many reasons, including
the ability to back things out. I've been trying to help in this
regard ... although, I must admit that, having looked at some
of the core vm stuff, I've more questions than answers as to
why things worked at all in the first place.

Back to more tweaking ...
