VESA FB on 2.2.15 fails with S3 on ia32

Hi,

As mentioned in the subject, the vesafb driver cannot set the S3 Virge DX
video mode as specified in the vga= parameter. I usually use 0x303, but ever
since 2.2.15 the mode is no longer set on startup. Instead, the screen
blinks and then remains black. I confirmed that on two machines with
identical S3 ViRGE. The only situation when the mode is set is when the vga=
parameter is missing from the command line. In a word, the VESA FB doesn't
work at all, VGA16 FB is always used instead...
AFAICS, the only things changed in the arch/i386/ files that might affect
the initial video mode setting were changed only in regards with the APM
support and no file relevant to the vesafb was changed for a looong time.
The video.S wasn't even touched, the same with vesafb.c
Does anyone have the same problem? I attach the config of one of the two
mentioned machines, althoug it doesn't seem relevant - these machines are
completely different, the only thing between them is the S3 ViRGE.

regards,
marek

p.s. the above machines worked under 2.2.14, one of them under almost all
2.3.x with the same video setup.
