Funny. I am using 115200 without problems.

I usually start the host after the target, but not always. Also I have
killed the host and restarted without problems (but you may have
problems doing this when breakpoints are active, leaves them in the
kernel but the new gdb doesn't know about them and can not put back the
orgional instructions).

I suspect that the real problem here is baud rate. Not to fast or slow,
but different. Make sure both ends are speaking the at same baud rate.
