I've just tested out pre7-5, and it has MAJOR VM performance
degradations that were NOT in pre7-4.
In pre7-4, the kernel swapped out mainly pages from non-running tasks.
I am running several daemons in the background which are NOT used, there
are a lot of pages in this category. I could run netscape for quite a
while w/o have ANY swapout!
However, in pre7-5, very few pages from long-sleeping/unused daemons
are swapped out. Instead, almost all the swapped pages are from
netscape, which is the main running task! This slows down netscape
NOTICEABLY! In pre7-4, much swapping occurred which I did 'tar -xf
linux-2.3.99-pre5.tar', but in pre7-5, the system is almost completely
unresponsive, besides swapping a lot.
I then tried to run quake. Quake took MANY seconds to load, maybe even
30 seconds! This is highly unusual, and sure enough, many pages from
QUAKE were swapped out. Still almost no swapout from unused damons.
You can see that the swap-in numbers below are rather bad.
