Since the drive works in cdrecord, and (I assume) it doesn't make coasters,
the only thing I can think of that you're doing wrong is that you're trying
to mount the drive as a SCSI device (scd0). Try mounting it as an IDE device
(hdd, I'm guessing) and see if it works properly as that.

Unless you only have the one CD reader, you should only use the CD-ROM for
reading CDs because CD-RWs wear out pretty quickly. Just my 2 cents.
