Thanks to all who took the time to answer this. In this particular case,
removing /etc/resolv.conf solved the immediate problem (and, of course, brought
up one or two more). Why it was trying to resolve an IP address, I'm not sure-
I had already hacked /etc/inetd.conf to call telnetd directly instead of using
the tcpwrappers.
