smbd and nmbd have nothing to do with smbfs.
smbd, nmbd: server side
smbfs+smbmount: client side

Which samba version do you use?
There was a bug in one samba version that prevented smbfs from
reconnecting to Windows shares. Could you upgrade to the newest version?
