I applied your patch to 99pre7.1. My preliminary observations
show that it helps get the system out of swap ( but I will
do more testing later today).

I tried various pre99 kernels a 49pre2 and was not able to
reproduce any errors with swapon/swapoff. The kernel with
your patch applied didn't have any problems with swapoff
either.

I did notice a new issue with 99pre7.1 + your patch + little
super.c compile fix + missing ";" in Rik's patch. I
simultaneously ran bonnie on an ide disk and a scsi disk and
the system went OOM and started killing processes :(.
