Please help :) Sound on via kx133

Hello,

I'm having a problem trying to setup my sound card on a new Athlon
system. Whenever I play sounds through esound or mpg123, the system
completely freezes and emits a high pitched sound from the speakers...
The keyboard / mouse are completely dead, but if I then ping the
machine, everything resumes as normal. I can play audio CDs and issue
commands like 'cat soundfile > /dev/dsp' without any problems.

I have tried both the kernel es1371 driver and the ALSA drivers --
results are the same for both. Kernel 2.2.14 or 2.2.15pre19.

The system:

Motherboard: Abit ka7 (via kx133 chipset)
processor: Athlon (700MHz)
Sound Card: Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI (es1371)
Video: S3 Trio/3D AGP chipset
Network: Netgear 310TX

Any help / pointers would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,

Nate
