ok. i've tried to reproduce the shutdown state with booting
init=/bin/bash, etc. to no avail no matter what is done, ejection of
the card will hang the machine regardless. the only condition it
doesn't hang is at the end of "shutdown -hf now". in all other
attempts, there is a total loss of keyboard, mouse, serial, etc. in the
shutdown state, the machine reacts normally to the keyboard/mouse/serial
port.
