I have the same problem. Sound or mp3 plays till very end, then in the
last half second, hard lockup. Requires hard reset. I have not enabled
usb though. Finally removed the sound card. Ahh.. blissful silence.

        Kernel 2.2.14-smp and 2.3.99-pre5-smp
        Asus P3C-D w/ PIII 500's M=256Mb
        ess1938 / Alsa [driver,lib,util] 0.5.6
        gcc 2.95.2

I wish I had more info but do not have the card in the box to generate
anything more. I have not tried it in uP build.
