ncr538xx scsi card

I have a question about the ncr53c810 scsi cards and the kernel
documentation.

I have 2 devices connected to this scsi card 1 is my scanner
(Mustek 12000sp) connected to the external port id 6, while the
other is now my cd-rw id 5 (hp 9210i). (This is a SMP box DUAL
233's 128 Meg of RAM).

When I type make menuconfig and go into the scsi lowlevel
dirvers I select the ncr53c8xx or the sym53c8xx as modules.
There is a parameter that has to do with the transfer rate. I
think tha tby default it is 20 and the documentation says to set
it to 40. It also says it can be set to 5 10 20 or 40. When I
first installed my cd-rw I could not burn anything and was
getting errors in my log files saying that I had a scsi timeout
error. After I changed this value to 5 The errors seem to have
gone away.

My question is what is this value for (it seems to be transfer
speed related)? Also since my scanner was fine at 20 is there
anyway to set this to 20 for one device and 5 for another
device?

Joe
