potential vm weirdness in 2.3.99-pre2

My single processor (celeron) box has up and running 2.3.99-pre2 for 26
days. During this time I have had X going the whole time and being going
in and out of quake3

It seems that the memory available in the box is somewhat bazaar, ie
significant memory is free and almost all of swap has been used.
The box seems to be getting slower and slower.

current memory stats are:
[david@chef src]$ vmstat
   procs memory swap io
system cpu
r b w swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us
sy id
 3 0 0 36632 2888 688 86152 0 0 3 2 13 0
10 6 11

and

[david@chef src]$ cat /proc/meminfo
total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached:
Mem: 129519616 119771136 9748480 0 1216512 76161024
Swap: 74022912 62058496 11964416
MemTotal: 126484 kB
MemFree: 9520 kB
MemShared: 0 kB
Buffers: 1188 kB
Cached: 74376 kB
HighTotal: 0 kB
HighFree: 0 kB
LowTotal: 126484 kB
LowFree: 9520 kB
SwapTotal: 72288 kB
SwapFree: 11684 kB

The box doesn't seem to stop, but starts swapping more and more
frequently.
If you want any extra details, feel free to ask.
