Here's more. The system hung while I was writing an audio CD.
When I rebooted, the CD drive was no longer recognized by the
SCSI controller. I had to switch the power off and on to get
around this.

On my next attempt, the system didn't crash, but I got the following
error messages:

Then, it wrote the four tracks to the CD it was supposed to. Didn't
get to the fixating stage. After apparently doing nothing (but the
write light on the CD drive was on) I got these messages:
