Memory/swap problems in 2.3.99x

Speaking of memory, I experience strange things happening
to my SMP box under 2.3.99. When I use networking a lot
(eg playing MP3s from nfs-mounted directory or backing up
my system on a remote box) my memory usage starts getting
weird. Even though I have 512MB RAM in this box I see
swap usage growing higher and higher, up to say 256MB,
and eventually the box get killed/stuck, usually just
plainly freezes completely; at the same time reported
amouny of cached memory stays at the same level it was
when I started using networking heavily - usually about
300-350MB.
This happens under all 2.3.99s. Alan's ac patches seem
to help a bit (it takes more time befor lockup occurs)
but does not fix the problem. 2.3.49 seemed quite OK
in this respect.

Oh, one more thing: when rebooting see "Undead
VM entry" messages sometimes, and there are times
the filesystems cannot be properly unmounted. Also
trying to run "swapoff -a" either never finishes
or takes an abusive amount of time (say 10 minutes),
even though the reported amount of used swap is much
less than the reported amount of free memory.
