2.3.99-pre3 annoying bugs.

From: Dylan Griffiths (dylang+kernel@thock.com)
Date: Tue Apr 11 2000 - 19:11:06 EST

Hello. I recently grabbed 2.3.99-pre3 to see what kinds of problems still
existed with it in my configuration. I had been running 2.2.15pre13 with no
problems.

BUG: sound I/O gains not available via /dev/mixer in 2.3.99
-> I don't know if this is an SB driver problem, or a problem with the OSS
layer in the kernel. Either way, the random gain settings add a lot of
"noise" to the output of my soundcard.

BUG: ISAPnP in 2.3.99 doesn't work with my Awe64 Gold (had to use isapnp
tools)
-> It would detect the MIDI part of it, but not the main part. The SB wave
driver would complain a lot. Compiling them as modules didn't help. I had
to revert to my isapnp tools to get it working again.

BUG: choppy sound caused by changing between terminals or scrolling frame
buffer
-> I'm assuming this is because of a change in how kernel memcpy works.
Under
2.2.15pre13, I could alt+Fn between all 6 virtual consoles very quickly
without hearing a break in sound. I also had to scroll down for a long time
before the sound would break up in a virtual console. With 2.3.99-pre3,
it's very, very easy to skip MP3 audio decoding (via XMMS in an X session in
another VC).. Audio that could be skipped at the drop of a hat was one of
the reasons I stopped using Windows, as it distracts from work in other
consoles and X terms.

BUG: both kernels had problems giving bogus input to X after switching from
a VC
-> This one seems to be a long standing bug that I would love to see die.
If I change to the X console after using a normal virtual terminal, the PS/2
mouse flies off into the corner, and the keyboard sometimes emits garbage.
The mouse will not properly move until I toggle the 3rd button.

If there are patches for these, please point me to them. I hope that these
can be addressed before 2.4.0 goes out, as they are (IMO) some of the subtle
and annoying bugs that make a system not fun to use.
