Daniel,

I have written a utility that can detect problems internally in the hard
drive. It can be obtained here http://csl.cse.ucsc.edu/software/smart/

if you run
smartctl -e /dev/hdb
smartctl -O /dev/hdb
smartctl -c /dev/hdb

if any thresholds fail. Call Quantum and get a new disk.

Michael
