Re: /proc/net/dev reporting on virtual interfaces

Okay, but now that lends a question... And I guess this question was asked and
decided a long time ago, but why?
Before with the kernel reporting stats in /proc/net/dev I did not have to
compile in firewall support for every machine, and install a secondary program
to gather stats.
Is there a kernel patch to emulate the old behavior? Instead of needing
firewalling and IPCHAINS .. sure would reduce the admin load.
