It's true for all my soundcards (opti c931, sb16, sb live!, only the
last one with the cvs version (since the latest release doesn't support
emu10k1)).

It's pure fact ;-> playback works with rare glitches, o.k., but recording
simply does not work without horrendeous glitches. Neither sox nor my own
program nor snd can continuously record streams.

I doubt it ;) It really looks like some generic incompatibility.
