[2.3.99-pre3] via-rhine.o and gcc 2.95.2 doesn't get along

I'd like to point out that egcs-1.1.2 executed the code fine even with #if
0 (ie. without compiling the additional code). GCC 2.95.2's optimizations
breaks the code, at least that's what I think.
