Olaf,

You have proven the valid case of onboard chipests and thank you.
This works only because of LBA translations.

Strip the drive and pass hdb=79406,16,63

root@p6dnf% fdisk /dev/hdg
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 13870.
This is larger than 1024, and may cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software form other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help):

13870*16*63 != 79406*16*63

Welcome to the world of 40GB becoming ~7GB......

Recall some time ago that people raged over the issue of forcing huge
geometry.
