Bzzt. The tulip driver has always been broken for at least some cards.
Back since at least 1.3.x.

Bad design in the kernel was fixed or thrown out. If you don't like it,
use the 2.0 or 2.2 kernel. Donald didn't like the chosen direction, didn't
want to keep in sync with Linus, and jumped off the boat. Jeff didn't push
him off - cut him some slack.
