You did not mention at all which kernel version you are trying to
compile. Starting somewhere in the late 2.1.x series, and
including every 2.2.x and 2.3.x kernel since - CONFIG_SMP has
existed and DOES appear on menuconfig.
If your kernel source does not have SMP as a menuconfig option
then it is either a 2.0.x kernel, or it is broken.
In 2.0.x, SMP had to be enabled by editing the top level makefile
and uncommenting the appropriate SMP enabling line.
