SCSI reset

With the most recent kernels (I think 2.3.47-2.3.50), I keep getting
an infinite loop in the SCSI initialization phase. lspci returns this
for the controller:

        01:04.0 SCSI storage controller: Symbios Logic Inc. (formerly
        NCR) 53c895 (rev 02)

My system is an ES40 (Quad 500MHz 21264 Alphas, tsunami chipset).
Here is the error I'm getting while booting up:

sym53c8xx_reset: pid=0 reset_flags=2 serial_number=2 serial_number_at_timeout=2
sym53c895-0: resetting, command processing suspended for 2 seconds
sym53c895-0: command processing resumed
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.

This just keeps repeating, I assume forever but I only let it go about
10 times. Any ideas on what is wrong with this? The relevent config
file stuff looks like this:

        CONFIG_SCSI=y
        CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD=y
        CONFIG_SD_EXTRA_DEVS=40
        CONFIG_CHR_DEV_ST=m
        CONFIG_ST_EXTRA_DEVS=2
        CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=m
        CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR=y
        CONFIG_SR_EXTRA_DEVS=2
        CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=m
        CONFIG_SCSI_CONSTANTS=y

        CONFIG_SCSI_SYM53C8XX=y
        CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_DEFAULT_TAGS=16
        CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_MAX_TAGS=64
        CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_SYNC=40
        CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_PQS_PDS=y
