PROBLEM: slow system with Kernel > 2.2.5, SMP & EISA

DESC: awful slow system with all kernel versions > 2.2.5
(incl 2.3.x) and the Mozart sound driver. System worked
          perfectly until kernel 2.2.5.

KEYWORDS: SMP, EISA, PCI, PentiumI

KVERSION: Linux version 2.2.14 (root@raven) (gcc version pgcc-2.95.2
19991024 (release)) #3 SMP Wed Mar 1 22:43:32 CET 2000

ENVIRONMENT: Dual Pentium 133 MHz,
             112 MB RAM,
             Neptune-Board (EISA+PCI),
             NCR 53c810 SCSI-II,
             Matrox Millenium I
             Mozart Sound Card

Hi!

I hope, you could help me.

I have a Dual Pentium 133 MHz, 112 MB RAM, Neptune-Board (EISA+PCI),
NCR 53c810 SCSI-II, Matrox Millenium I

After upgrading from 2.2.5 to 2.2.[6, ... 14] / 2.3.[16, ..., 47]
my system is running awfully slow. I have a high system load
(about 25% - 46% for each procesor). Mainly the complete X11-system has
a unusual high load (X: 45% CPU, enlightenment: 14%, netscape: 20%,
gkrellm: 20%) and these values are grabbed while I'm writing this message!

It takes 5 minutes to see the Gnome Software map! And I have a ISDN line!

Also, my Mozart based sound card hangs up the system when I try to load
the modules: soundcore, sound, ad1848, uart401, opl3, mpu401, v_midi and
adlib_card are ok, but when I try to load:
'mad16 io=0x530 irq=11 dma=3 dma16=0 mpu_io=0x220 mpu_irq=5' the system
goes into the great Nirwana!
Unfortunately the documentation for the Mozart sound drivers are old.
And I'm in doubt if the Readme-file is up-to-date.

Another crash occurs when I lock out of the X11 system.

Courious: [v 2.2.14]: I can log out and in (xdm) without problems, but
after activating the ISDN line, the system crashes when I try to log out.

Maybe this could help you:
I've compiled a 2.2.13 kernel without SMP support. I'd no lock-out error,
and the system seemed to run faster. I hadn't tried the sound support.

Also, I've seen that the ISA/EISA code in 'i386/kernel/io_apic.c' has
changed, maybe that's the problem???

I hope, you could help me,

Oliver.
