I didn't try "gcc -pipe", but I ran a few lmbench programs:

                stock with my patch
./lat_fifo
                19.4 18.4
./lat_ctx:
                ovr=4.8 ovr=4.5
                2 4.8 4.5
                4 5.8 5.5
                6 6.9 5.8
                8 6.9 6.1
