PROBLEM: reading large volumes of data from a Segate Baracuda

When attempting to read large volumes of data from a Segate Baracuda, I
encounter some strage problems. Under kernel version 2.2.14 the system
completely crashes, locks up and the console is filled with debugging
information (I do not know of a way to capture this since the machine is no
longer responding). Under kernel 2.3.47 the console briefly displays
similiar debugging information (for about 0.5sec) and resumes normal
operation. The following however is logged to the system log:

Output from /var/log/syslog under kernel 2.3.47
