If I read your mail-header correctly you are using the Debian
distribution.
Are you using Potato? If so there is a bug in current modutils. An
important bug report is already filed.

I had the same problem. I worked around the problem bei using the
"kernel-package" package and making a *.deb-package of the kernel image
with make-kpkg.
