IDE problem with 2.3.39pre2-2.3.41pre3 on Athlon system

Hello Andre,

I have a problem with my IDE system (vfat disk) since 2.3.39pre2 (2.3.38
and before was smooth). I use a 'poor' WDC AC32500H disk as backup and
Win98 dual boot disk and a 'half way' good IBM DDRS-34560UW on
AHA-2940UW for Linux (the IDE disk is the f*cking first disk in my
system).

So lilo is installed on the IDE disk and all IDE stuff is compiled as
modules.

SunWave1>lsmod
Module Size Used by
nls_iso8859-1 2860 0 (autoclean)
nls_cp437 4364 0 (autoclean)
ide-disk 8304 0 (autoclean)
ide-probe-mod 11768 0 (autoclean)
ide-mod 66672 0 (autoclean) [ide-disk ide-probe-mod]
vfat 14164 0 (autoclean)
fat 39648 0 (autoclean) [vfat]
ppp_async 9644 0 (autoclean)
ppp_generic 14696 0 (autoclean) [ppp_async]
slhc 6140 0 (autoclean) [ppp_generic]
serial 44132 0 (autoclean)
awe_wave 168564 1 (autoclean)
sb 43764 1 (autoclean)
uart401 7344 1 (autoclean) [sb]
sound 78808 0 (autoclean) [awe_wave sb uart401]
soundlow 516 0 (autoclean) [sound]
soundcore 3908 7 (autoclean) [sb sound]
tdfx 64936 2
autofs 14044 1 (autoclean)
eepro100 20996 1 (autoclean)

The IDE disk can be mounted as vfat on /net/DosC with the kernel
automountd.
All stuff worked with 2.3.38 and before.

Now with 2.3.39pre2 and above I can auto mount the vfat file system
clean 'ls -la /net/DosC/ + TAB|RETURN' (all modules are loaded
correctly) but NOT if I only do a 'lilo -v'.

With 'lilo -v' the base/core IDE modules would be loaded but lilo hangs.

SunWave1>lilo -v
LILO version 21, Copyright 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger

Reading boot sector from /dev/hda

[hang]

In another shell I get:

SunWave1>lsmod
Module Size Used by
ide-disk 8304 0 (autoclean)
ide-probe-mod 11768 0 (autoclean)
ide-mod 66672 1 (autoclean) [ide-disk ide-probe-mod]
awe_wave 168564 1 (autoclean)
sb 43764 1 (autoclean)
uart401 7344 1 (autoclean) [sb]
sound 78808 0 (autoclean) [awe_wave sb uart401]
soundlow 516 0 (autoclean) [sound]
soundcore 3908 7 (autoclean) [sb sound]
tdfx 64936 2
autofs 14044 1 (autoclean)
eepro100 20996 1 (autoclean)

Now I have to kill lilo as root from another shell.
Second lilo run works smooth:

SunWave1>lilo -v
LILO version 21, Copyright 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger

Reading boot sector from /dev/hda
Merging with /boot/boot.b
Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz
Added linux *
Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz.old
Added old
Boot other: /dev/hda1, on /dev/hda, loader /boot/chain.b
Added win98
/boot/boot.0300 exists - no backup copy made.
Writing boot sector.

I got the following in '/var/adm/syslog':

I got some kernel Oops with lilo, too:

ksymoops 0.7c on i686 2.3.41pre3. Options used
     -V (default)
     -k /proc/ksyms (default)
     -l /proc/modules (default)
     -o /lib/modules/2.3.41pre3/ (default)
     -m /usr/src/linux/System.map (default)

Warning: You did not tell me where to find symbol information. I will
assume that the log matches the kernel and modules that are running
right now and I'll use the default options above for symbol resolution.
If the current kernel and/or modules do not match the log, you can get
more accurate output by telling me the kernel version and where to find
map, modules, ksyms etc. ksymoops -h explains the options.
